Which Skate?

There are two different types of foot mounted skate: roller and inline. Both skates have a boot that is mounted to a frame that holds the axle containing the wheels. The major difference is the style of wheel alignment.

Roller Skates

Roller skates or “Quad Skates” have the classic 4 wheels aligned like the axles of a car. These skates provide great balance and dexterity, but suffer in speed and acceleration. Roller skates are more commonly seen in a roller rink where the skating surface is smooth hardwood that allows for activities such as dancing. Outdoor rollerskating is possible however the wheels are more easily worn down outdoors than on hardwood floors. According to dscdeptford.com The Quad Skate is a perfect choice for beginners. They allow for extra stability which is great for the learning process.

Inline Skates

Inline Skates have 2 to 5 wheels in a line down the center of the frame. According to InlineSkates.com, the the most popular type of skate is the recreational skate with the 4 moderately sized wheels. Inline skates provide the user great speed and acceleration complemented by the ease of speed retention.  Inline skates are more common among outdoor users who want to use their skates for travel or fitness. On inlines you are able to go long distances on both sidewalk and asphalt normally as fast as a bicycle without getting extreme fatigue. Inline skates come with a variety of boot and wheel styles to tailor your skate to its environment. Inline skates are more common amongst experienced skaters, but don’t let a small learning curve stop you from trying!
